Broken Sliding Door Glass? You Probably Don’t Need a New Door
The single most common question I get is whether a smashed sliding door means buying a whole new door. Almost always, it doesn’t. The glass panel sits in a frame, and in the large majority of cases I can replace just that panel — keeping your existing frame, track and hardware. It is faster, and it costs a fraction of a full door replacement.
I’m Paul, a QBCC-licensed glazier (licence 1005497) working across Logan for more than 30 years. If your sliding door glass is cracked, shattered or has come out of the frame, text me a photo and I’ll tell you straight away whether it’s a panel swap or a bigger job.
A Safety Note If Your Sliding Door Has Already Shattered
Sliding doors are required to use Grade A safety glass, which is usually toughened. When toughened glass fails it doesn’t crack — it collapses into thousands of small blunt fragments at once, often across a wide area. If that has happened:
- Keep children and pets well clear of the opening — fragments travel further than people expect.
- Don’t try to pull the remaining glass out of the frame. Panels stay under tension and can let go while you handle them.
- If it’s an external door, call our 24/7 emergency line — we can board up and make it secure the same day.
What We Replace
- Sliding patio and balcony doors — the standard two- and three-panel aluminium sliders found in most Logan homes.
- Stacker doors — multi-panel doors that slide and stack behind one another.
- Cavity and pocket sliders — doors that slide back into the wall.
- Sliding shower screens and internal doors.
- Sliding security and screen doors where the glass panel has failed.
Single-glazed, double-glazed, toughened, laminated, clear, obscure and tinted — all replaced to Australian Standard AS 1288.
Repair or Replace? How to Tell
It’s a glass replacement if…
- The glass is cracked, chipped at the edge, shattered, or has gone cloudy between the panes on a double-glazed unit.
- The panel is intact but the glass isn’t compliant safety glass — common in older homes, and worth upgrading.
It’s a repair, not a glass job, if…
- The door is stiff, jumps or drags — that’s usually rollers or a worn track.
- The door has come off its track but the glass is undamaged.
- The lock or handle has failed.
Not sure which one you’ve got? Send a photo. I’d rather tell you it’s a cheap fix you can handle yourself than turn up for nothing — and I don’t charge a call-out fee either way.
What Affects the Cost
Sliding door panels are large, heavy and almost always toughened, so they sit above a standard window pane in price. The things that move the number are:
- Panel size — the single biggest factor.
- Glass type — toughened, laminated, double-glazed or tinted.
- Access — ground floor versus a balcony or an upper level.
- Timing — after-hours and emergency call-outs cost more than a booked daytime job.
For indicative pricing across glass types, see our glass replacement cost guide. For a real number on your door, text a photo and the measurements — that’s an actual quote, not a range.
How to Get a Quote in Under a Minute
No forms, no waiting on hold. Text 0417 791 047 with three things:
- A photo — include the frame, not just the broken glass.
- Measurements — width × height of the glass panel.
- Your suburb.
Most jobs are quoted the same day. Most sliding door panels are replaced same-day or next-day, depending on whether the glass is a stock size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you replace just the glass in a sliding door?
Yes — in most cases that’s exactly what we do. The frame, track and rollers stay, and only the glass panel is replaced. A full door replacement is only needed when the frame itself is bent or corroded.
How long does sliding door glass replacement take?
The fitting is usually one to two hours per panel. The variable is glass supply: stock sizes are often same-day, while oversized, double-glazed or tinted panels may need to be cut to order.
Do you do same-day sliding door glass replacement?
Frequently, yes — and always for emergencies where a door is left open to the weather or unsecured. If we can’t fit the glass the same day, we’ll board it up and make the property secure at no extra call-out charge.
Does sliding door glass have to be safety glass?
Yes. Under AS 1288, glass in sliding doors must be Grade A safety glass — toughened or laminated. If your existing door has ordinary annealed glass, it predates the standard and is worth upgrading when you replace it.
My door came off its track — can you fix that too?
Yes. We handle rollers, tracks and alignment alongside glass work. See our glass door repair page for the full range of door services.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. No call-out fees, and every job is backed by a 12-month guarantee.
