After more than 30 years replacing door glass, the most useful thing I can tell you up front is this: in almost every case you do not need a new door. I measure the opening, have Grade A safety glass cut to size and fit the new panel into your existing frame. That is what keeps the price down and gets you secure again quickly. Do I need a whole new door, or just new glass?

Almost always just the glass. A glass door is a frame, a set of rollers or hinges, and one or more glass panels. When a panel breaks the frame is usually still perfectly good, so I remove the broken panel, clean out the channel and fit a new toughened safety glass panel cut to the exact size. The door looks and works as it did before, and you avoid the cost and lead time of a full door replacement. The only time I will suggest a new door is when the frame itself is bent, rotten or corroded — and I will show you why before you decide.

How much does door glass replacement cost in Logan?

The price comes down to four things: the size of the panel, the type of glass (toughened, laminated or patterned), whether it is single glazed or a double glazed unit, and how the panel is held in the frame. That is why I quote from a photo rather than a price list. Send me a picture that shows the frame, plus a rough width and height, and I will text back a firm price — not a range. Which glass doors do I repair and replace?

Older doors often have plain float glass that would not meet today’s standards. When I replace a panel it always goes in as Grade A safety glass, so the repair also brings the door up to the current Australian Standard.

Sliding door glass replacement

Sliding doors are the most common glass door I replace across Logan, and the question I get asked most is whether a smashed panel means buying a whole new door. It almost never does — in the large majority of cases I replace just the glass panel and keep your existing frame, track and rollers.

Because sliding doors must use Grade A safety glass under AS 1288, the panels are heavy and almost always toughened, so it is not a job to attempt yourself. Why door glass has to be safety glass

Under Australian Standard AS 1288, glass in doors and beside doors must be Grade A safety glass — toughened or laminated — because it sits at head and body height and people walk into it. Toughened glass is around four to five times stronger than ordinary glass and, if it does break, it crumbles into small blunt pieces rather than long shards. It is cut and toughened to size before it reaches me, which is why measuring correctly the first time matters and why this is not a job for a general handyman.

3. If the opening is unsafe, I make it safe first while the glass is being cut.
4. I fit the new panel, check the door slides or swings properly, and take the broken glass away.

Broken glass door? What to do right now

Keep children and pets away from the door, and do not try to pull loose pieces out of the frame — cracked glass can let go all at once. If it is safe to do so, tape a sheet of cardboard over the opening to keep the weather out, then send me a photo.

Can you replace just the glass in a sliding door?

Yes. In most cases I replace only the glass panel and keep your existing frame, track and rollers. You only need a new door if the frame itself is damaged.

How long does door glass replacement take?

Fitting the new panel usually takes well under an hour. Standard toughened panels can often be supplied quickly; unusual sizes, patterned or laminated glass can take a few days, and I will make the door safe in the meantime.

Is broken door glass covered by insurance?

Many home and contents policies include accidental glass breakage, so it is worth checking yours. I provide an itemised invoice you can use for a claim.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

No. Quotes are free and there is no call-out fee anywhere in Logan.
